Philippe Gillet
Philippe Gillet est guitariste, compositeur et musicien voyageur. Né dans une famille de musiciens, il débute son parcours dans les conservatoires parisiens où il reçoit une formation classique de guitariste avant de s’orienter vers le jazz. Il approfondit ce langage auprès du guitariste Pierre Cullaz, tout en poursuivant des études d’harmonie et de composition au conservatoire.
En 2009, il enregistre un premier album de compositions originales avec le Philippe Gillet Quintet, publié sur le label Nebela. À la même période, ses voyages en Amérique latine nourrissent profondément son univers musical : le choro et le tango influencent son jeu et marquent son second album, Prose, paru en 2012 sur le label Caxixi.
Animé par une curiosité constante, Philippe Gillet développe ensuite de nombreux projets mêlant jazz et musiques du monde. Cette ouverture le conduit naturellement vers l’ethnomusicologie. Il passe près d’un an à parcourir les villages roms des Balkans et d’Europe de l’Est, avant de s’installer à Istanbul, où il se forme au oud auprès de maîtres tels que Ibrahim Karaoğlu et Hasan Hekimoğlu. Un long parcours autour de la Méditerranée l’amène également à s’initier aux traditions arabo-andalouses du Maghreb, aux musiques de la vallée du Nil en Égypte et au rebetiko à Athènes.
Aujourd’hui, Philippe Gillet mène de front plusieurs projets artistiques. Il poursuit son travail autour du jazz, tout en développant une pratique du oud et de divers luths orientaux, qu’il joue notamment avec son épouse Dilara. Parallèlement à son activité de musicien et de compositeur, il se consacre largement à l’enseignement du jazz et des musiques orientales, dans une démarche de transmission nourrie par la tradition, l’oralité et l’improvisation.

Philippe Gillet is a guitarist, composer, and musical traveler. Born into a family of musicians, he began his musical path in Parisian conservatories, where he received a classical guitar education before turning to jazz. He deepened his jazz language through studies with guitarist Pierre Cullaz, while continuing his training in harmony and composition at the conservatory.
In 2009, he recorded his first album of original compositions with the Philippe Gillet Quintet, released on the Nebela label. During the same period, his travels in Latin America deeply influenced his musical universe: choro and tango left a strong imprint on his playing and shaped his second album, Prose, released in 2012 on the Caxixi label.
Driven by a constant curiosity, Philippe Gillet went on to develop numerous projects spanning jazz and world music. This openness naturally led him toward ethnomusicology. He spent nearly a year traveling through Roma villages in the Balkans and Eastern Europe, before settling in Istanbul, where he studied oud with masters such as Ibrahim Karaoğlu and Hasan Hekimoğlu. An extended journey around the Mediterranean also allowed him to engage with Arabo-Andalusian traditions in the Maghreb, the musical heritage of the Nile Valley in Egypt, and rebetiko in Athens.
Today, Philippe Gillet leads several artistic projects in parallel. He continues to explore jazz while also developing a practice centered on the oud and various Middle Eastern lutes, which he performs notably with his wife Dilara. Alongside his work as a performer and composer, he is deeply committed to teaching jazz and Middle Eastern music, pursuing an approach to transmission rooted in tradition, oral practice, and improvisation.
